Meta Business Agent is Meta’s AI for responding to customers on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. It works well for businesses with a stable catalog and repetitive questions. Hospitality, however, works with rates and availability that change every day, integration with the booking engine, and long conversations that end in a sale. This is where a generic agent reaches its limit.
This article explains what the agent does, how Meta charges for it as of August 1, 2026, what changes in WhatsApp on October 1, where it falls short in hospitality, and what changes when the AI is specialized in the sector. It also shows why, with Asksuite AI, Meta does not charge tokens: the responses fall under the service message rule and the free allowance of 1,000 messages per month. And it presents Asksuite optimizations that already generate average savings of 40% on the new cost of these messages.
What is Meta Business Agent?
It is Meta’s AI for automating conversations with customers on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Meta introduced the agent on June 3, 2026, at the Conversations event in London, and announced its expansion to businesses of all sizes.
According to the official Meta announcement, more than 1 million businesses were already using a Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger at that time. Availability still varies by market and business eligibility.
In the app, the agent learns from the Facebook page, previous conversations, and the company website, and accepts catalogs and price lists sent by the business, as described on the official product page. From there, it responds in your place 24 hours a day.
What it aims to do, according to Meta:
- Answer questions about the business, such as address and opening hours.
- Talk about products or services and recommend catalog options.
- Provide prices based on what was uploaded.
- Schedule, qualify leads, and help close sales.
- Transfer the conversation to a person at times defined by the business.
Setup is simple and starts in the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram, Messenger, or Meta Business Suite. For a small business with a stable catalog, it works well.
Was Meta Business Agent made for hotels?
No. It is a generic agent, designed for businesses in any segment. The integration examples cited by Meta show where the focus is: Shopify and Zendesk in the global announcement and, in Latin America, Nuvemshop, announced at the same event. These are e-commerce and support systems, not hospitality distribution systems.
This matters because selling accommodations is not like selling an off-the-shelf product:
- Rates change by date, occupancy, and season.
- Availability changes with every booking.
- There are room types, rate plans, and policies that vary from one another.
- The traveler compares, negotiates, and decides within the conversation.
An agent that learns from static content has trouble keeping up with this dynamic.
How much does Meta Business Agent cost?
Instead of a fixed per-message rate, Meta charges the agent’s messages by the AI tokens consumed, the same logic used by language model providers. Billing started on August 1, 2026, and is described in the official Meta developer documentation.
The official numbers are:
- Rate: US$ 2.00 per 1 million tokens, at a single global rate that does not vary by country.
- Single charge: the same amount covers both AI processing and message delivery.
- Cost per message: according to Meta, a message usually consumes 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which comes out to about 4 to 5 cents per message.
- What is counted: the tokens used to read the customer message and generate the reply. Simple responses cost less, and complex responses cost more.
- Billing: monthly invoice, issued at the end of each billing period.
The point is that “per token” sounds cheap on paper, but the bill is calculated message by message, and a support interaction rarely ends with a single reply. Meta itself gives two examples: a simple question, such as opening hours, generated 4 messages and about 80,000 tokens, totaling between 16 and 20 cents. A complex interaction generated 10 messages and about 250,000 tokens, totaling between 40 and 50 cents.
A simulation to size it up. The table below uses those two official examples as a reference. The simple question is equivalent to a quick inquiry, such as check-in time. The complex interaction is equivalent to a quote with dates, room types, and policies. The values are an order of magnitude estimate, not an invoice.
| Agent interactions per month | Quick question (US$ 0.16 to 0.20 each) | Consultative quote (US$ 0.40 to 0.50 each) |
| 500 | US$ 80 to 100 | US$ 200 to 250 |
| 1,000 | US$ 160 to 200 | US$ 400 to 500 |
| 3,000 | US$ 480 to 600 | US$ 1,200 to 1,500 |
Notice that the bill grows with volume and complexity at the same time. There are also two points that weigh on hotels: the agent’s messages are not included in the free service message allowance and continue to be charged by token in conversations coming from Click-to-WhatsApp ads. We explain both further below.
What are the access paths to the agent?
Billing does not reach everyone in the same way. In practice, there are two paths:
Small businesses, through Meta apps. Access happens through WhatsApp Business, Instagram, Messenger, or Meta Business Suite. Activation takes minutes and does not require an integration project. Meta said that getting started is free and that, in the coming months, access will move to its paid subscriptions, with options for businesses of all sizes.
Larger businesses, through the Meta Business Agent Platform. This is the layer used to build, customize, and deploy agents at scale, with enterprise controls, rules, and metrics. On WhatsApp, it works alongside the WhatsApp Business Platform, the official API, and has been open since July 1, 2026, to partners and directly integrated companies. This is the path where the US$ 2.00 per 1 million token charge applies.
This second scenario is where most hotels with a structured operation fit, because reservation centers with several agents usually operate through the official API, not the app. For these hotels, the relevant model is the token one, exactly the one that grows with conversation volume and complexity.
Why does the per-token cost weigh more in hotel conversations?
Because hotel conversations are usually long and consultative. The traveler asks about dates, rates, room types, child policies, payment methods, parking, breakfast, and pets.
In practice:
- A simple question ends quickly, with few messages.
- A quote goes back and forth several times, and each agent reply is a billed message.
- More complete responses consume more tokens per message.
- Since the hotel sells within the conversation, the number of messages per interaction is naturally high.
In other words, the same model that costs little for a small business can weigh most heavily exactly where the hotel needs it most: in the conversation that sells.
And what changes in WhatsApp on October 1, 2026?
Starting on October 1, 2026, Meta will begin charging for service messages, which are non-template replies sent by human agents or third-party AIs within the 24-hour window.
The change applies to every hotel using the official API, with or without Meta’s agent. We explain what changes, what remains free, and how to optimize costs in the article about the new WhatsApp Business API pricing for hotels.
How much does it cost to reply with Asksuite AI?
With Sophia, Asksuite’s AI, Meta does not charge tokens. For Meta, each Sophia reply is a service message, the same category as a reply written by a human agent. It falls under the monthly allowance of 1,000 free service messages per number and has free delivery within the 72-hour window of Click-to-WhatsApp ads.
The difference comes from Meta’s own rule. A non-template response can only be classified in one of two ways: either it is a Meta Business Agent message, charged by token, or it is a service message, charged per delivered message. Never both at the same time.
| Situation | Meta Business Agent | Sophia (Asksuite) |
| How Meta classifies the reply | Agent message, charged by token | Service message, charged per delivered message |
| Free allowance of 1,000 service messages per month | Not applicable: tokens are charged from the first message | Included in the allowance. Country-based pricing only starts on the 1,001st service message for that number |
| 72-hour window for Click-to-WhatsApp ads | Delivery is free, but the tokens used to read and reply are still charged | Free delivery |
| Where the AI cost appears | On the Meta invoice, by token | On the Asksuite platform |
To take advantage of the free window for conversations that come from ads, see the post about Click-to-WhatsApp ads in hospitality.
It is also worth remembering that the allowance is per phone number and applies to all service messages for that number, whether from Sophia or human agents. For that reason, concentrating information into fewer replies makes the allowance go further.
What Asksuite did to reduce the cost of service messages
Since each service message counts toward the bill, Asksuite’s Product team started working on optimizations right after Meta’s announcement on July 1. The logic is to communicate the same content in fewer messages, both in AI replies and in human replies.
Average savings of 40% on the new cost. With just the initial optimizations, average savings for Asksuite customers already reaches 40% of the new service message cost. The resources are free for customers and available before October 1.
- Economy mode for agents: groups messages and images before sending. Four breakfast photos, for example, become a single message.
- Economy mode for AI: the AI answers questions with multiple topics in a single message, at the conversation points the hotel configures.
- Economy mode for quotes: the quote with all room options becomes a PDF, with images, descriptions, and buttons to the booking engine, sent together with a single message.
- Campaign source in Live Chat: the agent sees which Click-to-WhatsApp ad the traveler came from and starts the conversation with context.
- 72-hour window counter: shows in Live Chat and Auto Kanban how much free ad time is left.
The details of each feature and the recommended channel strategies are in the article about how to optimize costs at your hotel even with Meta’s new pricing.

Does Meta Business Agent integrate with the hotel’s booking engine, PMS, and CRM?
Not natively in the app. In that path, its knowledge comes from uploaded content, such as the Facebook page, website, catalog, and price list, and from previous conversations, not from a real-time query to the hotel’s systems.
In the Meta Business Agent Platform, Meta talks about connection with hundreds of systems, but the examples released so far are for e-commerce and support. If the hotel’s booking engine or PMS is not among the connected systems, real-time querying depends on an integration project.
For hospitality, this is the most serious limitation. Without integration with the booking engine:
- It does not check real availability at the moment of the conversation.
- It does not return the current rate for the requested dates.
- It works with a price list that may already be outdated.
In a market where rates and availability change all the time, answering with static information is a direct risk to the reservation.
Does it understand your hotel’s context and the hospitality market?
Only what you can teach it through content. It is not born with hospitality context and does not know, by default, the logic of rate plans, cancellation policies, packages, room types, and seasonality.
A specialist agent starts from this scenario and is fed by the hotel’s own knowledge base. A generic agent depends on you to anticipate and upload every detail, and even then it may still have no answer for what was not foreseen.
Can it give the traveler wrong information?
Yes, and that is the point that most worries hospitality. Any AI can make mistakes, but the risk grows when it does not have access to the source of truth, which is the booking engine and the PMS. Without that access, the AI tends to fill in the gaps with the answer that seems most likely.
In practice, this appears as:
- Reporting a rate that is no longer valid for those dates.
- Confirming availability that does not exist.
- Stating a policy, such as pets or cancellation, that the hotel does not offer.
Wrong information at decision time is costly. Either the traveler gives up, or the hotel has to walk back the promise later, which damages the experience and trust.
In practice, what does this look like in a conversation?
Three common examples, comparing a generic agent without integration with a specialist AI integrated into the hotel’s systems.
Example 1, availability and rate.
- Traveler: “Do you have a room for the October 12 holiday? What is the price for two people?”
- Generic agent: responds based on the uploaded price list, which may be outdated, and risks quoting a rate or availability that are no longer valid.
- Integrated specialist AI: checks the booking engine in real time, responds with current availability and rates, sends room photos, and the booking link.
Example 2, specific policy.
- Traveler: “Do you accept pets? And is there a crib in the family room?”
- Generic agent: if the data is not in what it learned, it may risk a “yes” or “no” without a basis.
- Specialist AI: answers from the hotel knowledge base and transfers to the reservations team when the case requires it.
Example 3, negotiation.
- Traveler: “Is there a discount for 5 nights?”
- Generic agent: may not know the rate plans and give an imprecise answer.
- Specialist AI: knows the registered plans, responds with the correct condition, and drives the close, or transfers to an agent when necessary.
What changes with a hospitality specialist AI, like Sophia?
Sophia is Asksuite’s AI built for hospitality. The main difference is what it can see: instead of relying only on static content, it quotes with data from the integrated booking engine.
| Criterion | Meta Business Agent | Sophia (Asksuite) |
| Built for | Businesses in any segment | Hospitality |
| Knowledge source | Content uploaded by the business and previous conversations, plus systems connected via the platform | Hotel knowledge base, with quoting integrated with the booking engine, PMS, and CRM. |
| Quoting | Depends on the uploaded price list or a custom integration | Price and availability queried in the booking engine, with photos and booking link |
| Integrations | Published examples from e-commerce and support, such as Shopify, Zendesk, and Nuvemshop | More than 500 integrations with booking engines, PMS, and CRM |
| Channels | WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger | WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, website chat, and email in Asksuite’s omnichannel platform, plus VoIP telephony in Brazil and, soon, Telegram. |
| Market context | Generic | Hospitality specialist |
| Charging for AI replies on WhatsApp | By token, with no free allowance and also charged in the 72-hour ad window | No token charges. AI replies to traveler messages are service messages: they fall under the allowance of 1,000 free per number per month and have free delivery in the 72-hour window |
| Scope | One AI agent | Part of a complete omnichannel platform for hospitality. |
The takeaway is simple: both respond quickly, but only one was built to answer with live information from your hotel.
Is Sophia just an AI booking assistant?
No. Sophia is part of Asksuite’s product ecosystem, and is integrated, for example, with the WhatsApp Performance Suite, built on the official WhatsApp API and featuring a set of tools that add more value to the hotel. Beyond the AI that quotes and responds, the Suite delivers:
- Funnel and agent performance dashboards, with service volume, quotes sent, reservations converted, and revenue by channel and campaign.
- Sales kanban and automatic distribution, sending each contact to the right agent.
- Automatic follow-up with AskFlow Agents, to recover quotes that did not close (this product can be contracted separately).
- Omnichannel operation, with conversations moving between website chat, Instagram, and WhatsApp without losing history.
- Official API, within Meta’s rules and with lower risk of the number being blocked.
Today, more than 3,000 properties manage WhatsApp with Asksuite. While Meta Business Agent is an agent that replies, Sophia comes within a structure that organizes the operation end to end.
It is worth looking in detail at how WhatsApp for hotels can become a revenue channel, not just support, and why the unofficial API puts the hotel number at risk.
So is Meta Business Agent useless?
No, and it is important to be fair. For a small business with a stable catalog and simple conversations, it works well: it responds instantly, filters repetitive questions, and is quick to set up. For a hotel, it can also make sense for low-complexity questions, such as check-in time, location, and parking.
The point is not whether Meta Business Agent is good, but whether it was built for your hotel’s challenge. Selling accommodations requires real-time data, integration, and market context, and that is where a generic AI reaches its limit.
How do you decide what makes sense for your hotel?
A quick checklist to guide the choice:
- Does the AI need to check real availability and rates in real time? If so, integration with the booking engine is mandatory.
- Do you want to avoid the traveler receiving the wrong price or policy? Prioritize an AI powered by the hotel’s own data.
- Are your sales conversations long and consultative? Estimate the cost per interaction, not just the per-token fee. With a third-party AI, like Sophia, responses fall under the service message allowance and are optimized to cost less.
- Do you invest in Click-to-WhatsApp ads? Remember that Meta agent messages continue to be charged by token within the free 72-hour window.
- Do you need more than replies, such as funnel, follow-up, and revenue visibility? Then the issue stops being about an agent and becomes about a platform.
- Do you serve travelers from multiple countries? Check language coverage and response quality in each one.
- Have you already reviewed the impact of the October 1 billing change on your operation? The bill changes with or without Meta’s agent.
Frequently asked questions
Is using Meta Business Agent cheaper than using another AI on WhatsApp?
You can’t say for sure without a simulation. Meta’s agent messages are charged by token, with no free allowance and including the 72-hour ad window. Replies from people or third-party AI are service messages, with country-based pricing, 1,000 free per number per month, and free delivery within the 72-hour window, plus the cost of the contracted solution. The outcome depends on volume, where the conversations come from, and how many messages each interaction has. If you are already an Asksuite customer, the WhatsApp cost calculator shows an estimate based on your history.
How can you reduce the cost of hotel WhatsApp support?
Concentrate information into fewer messages, since billing is per message, not by text length. Reply within 24 hours to conversations that come from Click-to-WhatsApp ads to open the free 72-hour window. Qualify with AI before the human queue and automate follow-up on open proposals. In Asksuite, economy modes group messages, images, and quotes before sending and already generate average savings of 40% on the new cost of service messages. See the details in the article on the new WhatsApp Business API charges.
Does Meta Business Agent replace a customer service platform?
That is not what it is designed to do. The agent’s focus is to respond, recommend, qualify, and transfer to a person. The commercial management of a reservation center, with distribution among agents, sales kanban, funnel dashboards, automatic follow-up, and revenue visibility by channel and campaign, depends on a customer service platform. For hotels, hotel chains, and resorts, that usually makes a difference.
Do I need the official API to use AI on my hotel’s WhatsApp?
To operate at volume, integrate a specialized AI, and have multiple agents on the same number, yes. The official API allows centralized history, campaign tracking, and the structure needed for compliance with LGPD and GDPR. Solutions using an unofficial API expose the number to banning.
